It was a tragedy. Judith’s cat was in his sixteenth year. He was hit by a car on the road. He was beyond recognition. The car must have been traveling at a reasonable speed; there was fur and a dislocated leg. Judith gathered the pieces gently into an old shoe box.
That cat had been her friend and companion day and night for well-nigh sixteen years. He was not a replaceable commodity. Benjie had his own distinct personality.
Sometimes, in fact quite often, Benjie had spent the day sleeping on the steps to the garden shed. Judith would dig a hole near the steps and bury Benjie there. She wasn’t very good at digging, but after an hour or so she had dug a hole large and deep enough to lay the shoe box. Judith covered the shoe box with soil and filled the hole.
What to plant on it? Judith would plant some sunflower seeds. Three or four happy sunflowers growing over Benjie’s grave was a fitting memorial. Judith went to the local garden shop and returned with a packet of sunflower seeds.
She was greeted at the door by Benjie. She had buried some other cat.
Oooh! A happy end? What’s wrong with you 😆

It’s the depth of autumn here scurrying towards winter. Clearly I’m miserable enough to write a happy ending!

Oh well, at least one cat can push up the sunflowers come spring, and it’s not Benjie. Yet.
PS; our cat is 17 and I don’t want to think about it really. Cantankerous old git, but he’s our cantankerous old git.

Our cat is 19 and she is more cantankerous than yours! Oh for a good night’s sleep!

Ah, a fellow sufferer! Every morning ours has dragged along a gift of socks, handkerchiefs etc from the folded laundry hamper. The vet says ‘it’s a cats way of bringing a gift to show the cat loves you.’ I call it another extra load for the washing machine.

I recently had to make that terrible decision for my beloved cat. It was one of the hardest things I’ve had to do. They burrow into our hearts, even the cantankerous ones!

Oh Bruce, thank you for ending this story on a happy note. But, the owners of the other cat will forever wonder what happened to their beloved furry friend.

It was one of those feral cats. Sorry to hear about your cat. Our cat has been crook twice in the last two months and after a couple of days gets up as if nothing has happened.

They are such a responsibility, and vets sure charge a lot!
“Even feral lives matter.” 🙂
It’s been below freezing for the last few nights, enough to shiver your timbers!

I loved that ending Bruce…
I never really bonded with a cat…nothing against them but dogs I can relate to.

We always had a cat while growing up but I never cared much about it. We had sheep dogs but no dogs as pets so we weren’t allowed to play with them. It is only in the last 20 years I have grown to appreciate dogs and cats. I even have photos of our cats and dogs over the last 20 years on the fridge door!!

You are a pet lover which is a great thing. We have been babysitting a Prairie Dog…those are fun animals to have around.

I hope Judith didn’t tell Benjie.

A cat knows everything. They only pretend to sleep.

At least the other cat got a proper burial. Or was it Benjie she buried who returned to live out his remaining eight lives?

My cat has used two of its nine lives up just in the last couple of months. She must be getting to the end of nine as she’s 19 year’s old!

Wow! That’s insane. I had a dog once. I think I’ve told you. He died when he was 10 of cancer.

It is very sad to lose a pet. My dog too died of cancer, and the next one died with epilepsy and was only 4.

Good job, as usual. I wish I had some clever remark to make.
