2348. A meeting of meats

Of course it was extremely unlikely that unattached Heather and unattached Colin would accidentally bump into each other in the meat section of their local grocery store. An accidental meeting (and ensuing blossoming romance) has to be ruled out because Heather went for the more deli-type meats such as salamis and stuffed quail, whereas Colin went for “proper meat” such as beef, lamb, and pork. Proper meat was what a real man devoured. In fact, Colin detested “all this foreign crap” that had invaded the meat shelves in recent years. The deli-meat section and the proper-meat section were at either ends of the aisle. They couldn’t possibly meet.

But Heather and Colin met in the confectionary section of the store. Both had a sweet tooth. On the first time they bumped into each other they chatted for thirty-five minutes surrounded by chocolates and toffees.

These days (several weeks later) Colin shops for Madrange Jambon de Paris Ham, Smoked Goose, and Cured Acorn Fed Iberico Underloin.

I wouldn’t be surprised if a marriage proposal is in the air.

2282. Outside the bakery

Rupert had asked me over the phone to meet him outside the corner bakery so that’s where I went – and waited, and waited.

Eventually he turned up. Why on the street outside the bakery I have no idea.

He said he would risk all by saying what he was going to say and blurted out that he loved me and he couldn’t think of anything else other than me and he was besotted and beside himself with infatuation and so on and so forth. Would I be his friend and could we go out?

I told him to jump in the lake. He left, and since I was there I went into the bakery and bought some buns.

2280. Dare to ask

Every morning I go to the café to get a latte and hopefully to catch a glimpse of her. Her name I believe is Claudia. She seems lovely. She is one of three baristas that work behind the counter but the café is so popular that you can’t guarantee that you’ll be served by Claudia. In fact I’ve only struck her twice. But she is there behind the counter being pleasant to everyone and looking enchanting. I’m sure she notices me. Sometimes she nods a greeting in my direction.

Next time I get her in the café line I’m going to be really daring and ask if she wants to go to the movies or something. She can only say no. I’ve never had much luck at dating but I’m not giving up yet. She can’t say yes if she’s not asked.

I try to be positive about things but so often rejection seems to be the name of the game. You can tell that most women I ask for a date are not too keen to go out with a guy in a wheelchair.

2275. Time to tarry

The late summer breeze flapped my sundress a little as I walked down the lane. I had no idea I was being watched. It had been a hot, hot summer. Autumn was beginning to set in but it was still stifling and light clothing was the order of the day.

It was the fourth day of work and I was the sole teacher in this little country school. I walked to work, taking a shortcut through a farmer’s field, down a track and over a stile and voila! I was there!

Of course I had permission to cross the farmer’s field. When I visited to seek permission the farmer wasn’t there, and nor was the farmer’s wife. Only their son was home – Nigel is his name – and he said taking a shortcut would be fine. Anyway, he was the one running the farm these days, and he was the one who would possibly sometimes bump into me on my way to work.

This was only the fourth day of school and I had already bumped into him three times! Each time it was at the stile and he was able to offer me a helping hand as I climbed over. Such a gentleman!

Today I’m leaving home a little earlier to give us time to tarry.

2283. Starlight romance

The night sky had no moon. It was pitch black which accentuated the stars. The evening was warm. Julie and I sat on the park bench in utter silence. We held hands and gazed in amazement at the stars. It was breath-taking. It was truly romantic. We kissed.

I don’t know who I kissed but it wasn’t Julie.

2191. Full moon

There was to be a full moon this coming Saturday. Monica knew that Crispin would propose. He was such a dyed-in-the-wool romantic. He loved the full moon, the stars, the night sky. In fact, Monica was so convinced he would propose that she changed her mind three times as to what she would wear.

The day arrived! The evening arrived!

“Let’s not go to a film or a concert tonight,” suggested Crispin. “There’s to be a full moon so let’s go to the park and wander around the duck pond as the moon rises.”

Monica was so glad she had opted to wear sensible shoes instead of the high heels she had initially planned.

Together they sat on a park bench at the duck pond. The moon rose. The evening was as clear as a bell. Monica sighed. It was a heavenly sigh of happiness and expectation. The moon had fully risen.

“Let’s go get a coffee,” suggested Crispin.

1152. Romance reader

Jonathan was nineteen years old and loved to read popular romances. He particularly liked the swashbuckling heroes who rescued the damsels in distress. Then they would fall in love and get married and live happily ever after. Why settle for dark, morose characters when a rumbustious champion could conquer the world? Of course, he never told his friends that he read romances.

It wasn’t silly for Jonathan to think he could be like that. There must surely be some bravery in the world, and some zealous ardour to go with it. All he need do was find the right girl and the right situation.

Anyway, he went to the First World War and got shot.
