Music 479: Piano Sonata 5

Here is a piano sonata in 3 movements. It is “serial music” – a 20th century style – so it might not be to everyone’s taste! After today there’s only one more music posting – tomorrow – at least for now.

Very different from the classical stuff I listen to. I normally listen to sad, classical music by Mozart or the minimalist stuff by Max Richter. But I liked this a lot. It expanded my knowledge of the genre, and provoked some sharp feelings.

I like the first one a lot. Don’t take this bad but this reminds me of the silent movie music…it must be in the same style…I love this Bruce!

Thanks Max. The little town here – where I shop because I live in the whop-whops (boonies) – has the first theatre in the country to have silent movies. The theatre manager would compose music for them and local farmers would come together to form an orchestra. I asked if any music survived and no one knew anything of it. The theatre is now a bookshop and plays the movies (silently). Incidentally the theatre manager in his early 30s was climbing the local volcano and a rock rolled down the mountain and killed him. He’s buried a couple of minutes away from where I live. All this to say, I loved your silent movies comment!

I live in the boonies also!
What a tragic accident! That is awful. That is terrible that they don’t have his music. Bruce…you should go and play some. Chico and Harpo Marx played piano for some silent movies when they grew up.

I’m glad you didn’t take offense…I meant it as a huge compliment. I think some of those movies along with the music are art.

So, I decided to see what the definition of sonata might be (musical ignoramous here), and found this sentence using the word of sonata in it. So, I am none the wiser about that form of music! But, I do want one of those robes now.

LOL. Sonata = Tune A, then Tune B, then Tune A and B mixed up together, then Tune A again , then Tune B again. The end. The scales the tunes are in are also part of it, but we will worry about that if we ever have another lesson.

Without any helping title, my mind was challenged to visualise something as I heard those pieces. So I imagined myself back in 20th century, as a student in the university of my favourite city, and I could immediately imagine myself down the oft-trodden paths, solitary but not joyless, aware of the life around….
