Music 79: Hay making

Make hay while the sun shines! This view was from my window.

The field is used also as a landing strip for aircraft that drop fertilizer on the farm. The process is called “aerial top dressing”. There are thousands of these “airstrips” throughout New Zealand. They are well mapped, and can be used for emergency landings as well – for example troubled aircraft or ambulance aircraft.

Today’s music however reflects the hay-making scene!

Old MacDonald had a farm…and on this farm the sun shone and it was time to get to work…and old MacDonald had a farm, and it was energetic happy work, a lovely day, all’s well with the world… and old MacDonald had a farm he was enjoying when suddenly he found himself dreaming and hearing, briefly, strains of Gershwin’s “An American In Paris”..and maybe thinkin’, with Robert Frost, he should stop and just let the hay make….still, it’s true that the livin’ is so good on the farm; make hay while the sun shines….( even after you’ve seen Paree.)

Summertime and the living is easy… I never noticed the American in Paris before! And – in passing – a shepherd’s hay is also some sort of peasant dance – but I don’t have a clue how it goes. AND as Frost says:
When I spread out my hand here today,
I catch no more than a ray

It is a happy, dancey kind of piece of music – peasants in smocks and pitchforks dancing around haystacks sprang to my mind – obviously I’m a bit of a peasant myself!

If I had a view like that I have to admit I’d probably be dancing with joy every day!!

I can see the baler doing its baling to this. And people loading up and patting the bales into place. I was going to say that the views out your windows are of different states entirely, but then I read you don’t live there anymore.

Yes – I thought of the baler as well. And you’re right about the different views. I’ve moved 13 times (I think) in the last 16 years! It’s what happens when you rent from unethical landlords! 😦 But I do get to have a change of scene!
