Derek hadn’t studied a thing all year. He was intelligent and talented, but school bored him. It was unchallenging.

The time came for his English exam. The whole country, at his level, was sitting the same paper.

Write about a short story you studied, and say why you liked it.

The short story I studied, wrote Derek, was by Marina Clotworthy. It was called “When the bells ring”. It was about…

Write about a novel you have studied, and describe your favourite character.

Ruth Burgess was my favourite character in Shirley Hattaway’s novel “Too Too Far”. She…

Derek scored the highest marks in the country that year. In fact, he got a scholarship.

I knew where this was going as soon as Derek had his own choice of WHICH story, novel, poem to write about…I knew because I once did exactly the same thing: made it all up, and with the same results.

You must not be as devious as your brother and I. My mother was a person incapable of faking the slightest thing. Once, when an insurance adjuster was coming to our house to assess damages after my parents had had a car accident, my father had a leg cast and told my mother: when the insurance guy is here, I’m going to ask you to go and change the channel on the TV, and I want you to limp terribly when you do it, so the guy will see we deserve more money. My mother did carry out the assignment, but she limped on one foot going, and the other foot coming back!

Oh dear. I’m caught out, but in such good company! I used to make up books for book reports and one time the teacher wrote that the book sounded so interesting she might read it. Even that didn’t stop me. But I mixed them in with real books, too.

Weren’t they asking for it? Incidentally, once in my English paper, I scored low when I employed my own scanner. Counselled by the Hoary-Headed Professor, I wrote the next exam like this: Shakespeare, that great Elizabethan Bard… Hardy, that meandering spirit of Wessex… Bingo! My score shot through the roof!

When training for Social Work, I wrote an essay on a particular Sociology book. My work was praised, but the lecturer was puzzled that I hadn’t mentioned a rather important element. I hadn’t the heart to tell him that it hadn’t featured in the book review on which I based my essay.
