781. Mink coat

In the days when wearing real fur wasn’t a particular environmental concern, Donald bought his third wife, Florina, a mink coat. It was gorgeous. It cost a packet.

“Thank you, Money-Donny-Darling,” said Florina. Donald liked to be called Money-Donny-Darling, especially in more intimate moments.

Thank you, Money-Donny-Darling! Thank you!

Florina insisted Donald come with her to parade the fur coat in the street.

“My goodness,” said Florina, “that woman over there is wearing something identical.”

Florina did not want to be seen in the same street as someone else wearing the same. She stepped into a shop alcove as the woman walked by.

“Money-Donny-Darling!” gasped the woman as she passed.

He “stole” away into the night. She filed for divorce and later became an activist with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Now she lurks in shop alcoves with a can of spray paint which she aims and fires at anyone wearing a fur coat. (I actually saw the PETA group do this spray-painting of fur coats, downtown Boston, in the 70’s)

My partner inherited a mink stole when her mother died…it was one of those with the head still on….eeek!!, …. we had some fun taking turns, adopting various poses wearing it in front of a mirror…and then we gave it to the Community Theatre prop and costume collection.

Since India is too warm for fur coats, people would poach tigers and lions and get the claws adorned with gold to be worn as pendants in gold chains, apparently these claws brought good luck. Ivory trade was common….I think this practice continues….sadly

My mother had a coat with a mink collar. No head, thank goodness. I did see an Addams Family episode where Morticia was wearing a fox fur that appeared to have the head still on and it turned out to be…alive.

That mink – it’ll get you every time! Truth be told, those coats feel wonderful but I could never wear one thinking about the animals they came from. I can’t see wearing fur unless you live of the grid in Alaska..

Here in New Zealand, introduced Australian possums are destroying the forests and the native bird life. There are millions of these pests. They, like polar bears, have fur fibres that are hollow and it would make the warmest clothing. Kill the possums off to save the environment by all means – but wear possum fur? NEVER!
